How I found out about this book?
I was being nosey on twitter and saw one of my friends writing some nice quotes and giving credit to Blake Mycoskie. So me, being the investigator that I am wanted to inquire and find out more. I found out a lot. I found out that this is the guy who owns TOMS, those comfy trendy shoes that everyone had in their wardrobes this past summer. On top of that, he had a book….dun dun dun…..! So then I go to amazon, and I look up his name, get the book title and ordered it. Has to be a pretty amazing story right?!
Friend on twitter randomly quotes Blake? this is only a shoe designer how prolific can he be? Owner of TOMS? Is that enough to write a book about? Then there it was, it was a story behind the company, and we all know how we all love a good story.
The thing is I really loved the story…to summarize really quickly, he went on a trip to Argentina, liked the shoes there, found out that children don’t wear shoes because they cannot afford them and so they get blisters and other foot injuries from playing in the streets without shoes, and Blake decides to start a company with a marketing campaign, you buy a pair of shoes, Blake gives a pair of shoes away free of charge. One for one. I thought it was brilliant enough to read about, and maybe you do too.
Long story short, I just got my copy in, and I’m on the second chapter already. Lots of good information. Book review coming soon.
Hi… Great post! At thirty-something years old & living in recession hit Ireland, I’m just starting out in business. But I love this post because I’d love to do something positive & meaningful that would benefit others via my fairy / fantasy art. This has got me thinking about what good I could potentially do…maybe a percentage of any profits going to Barnardos or donating art supplies to underfunded kids art projects? Who knows? I’ll definitely have to get my thinking cap on & follow Mr. Mycoskie’s inspiring lead =)
Exactly. I feel the same. Reading his book definitely has me inspired to find charities that I want to support through whatever product I can produce. He did a good job with is one-for-one campaign
