Branding is the new coming of age for this generation. Identity means everything. Being that social media and networking is so important, and almost everything about each of us individuals is accessible by internet, branding is extremely important. Even when you think you aren’t concerned with branding, you should be! There is a very fine line between personal and business. Many of us are just graduating colleges, and joining different work industries. So there are several things we have to think about, that our parents haven’t had to encounter when they were our age. (drunken pictures, wild nights, excessive use of profanity, etc.)
This generation is called ‘Generation Y’, not the baby boomers, but the innovators, when you think of the people born between 1975 and now, or even 1980 and now, we have reshaped the mold of how tradition occurs. There is a wide usage of gadgets, of technology, internet, applications, products, and services that makes everything we do, THAT much easier. It’s easier to communicate to our friends and family, and we are very well-connected by just the use of a smart phone. So when I think of branding and the people who are entrepreneurs as well as those that want to become entrepreneurs, what we present to the world, via twitter, via Facebook, blogger, WordPress, foursquare, and whatever social avenue you can think of is THAT much important. It’s very easy to say I’ll just add another email address to Gmail so my business email can come through one portal and my personal come through another portal. It’s easy to create more than one twitter, and more than one Facebook, but in order to brand effectively, it will be a lot easier to focus on one user account, and further, it will be easier for others to capture who you are through personal and business, while being mindful of how we paint pictures of ourselves.
So what I’m saying is, even though we like to have our private accounts, the accounts which you think are private, aren’t so private and people who want to access you, will do just that. We have to be mindful and tactful of the things we display socially.
Even businesses have Facebook and Twitter accounts and are investigating employees searching to see who employees ‘really are’. We, generation y, have to become automatic filters because all we have is our name, and you wouldn’t want to tarnish your own name. Let’s all keep this in mind!
Brand your brand!! Cheers!
Got something to say? Go for it!
